I am not sure whether you guys have faced this situation or not but this always happens to me and happened quite recently. This Friday I planned to leave office a little early and go to the evening show of “Byomkesh Bakshi” in the nearby multiplex with my friends. But as usual that day morning I found a quite long list of bugs assigned to me, as two of my colleagues were absent – one(girl) mysteriously missing and other(boy) may be out in desperation to look for her.

Anyway till 4.00 PM I was absolutely on time. Then …my Visual Studio started hanging, slowing things up and in midst of this mess IT HAPPENED.Our manager came down to my desk for the status of the assigned bugs. After few words on that topic, discussion took a different turn.He started talking about some multithreaded program he had written ten years back in VC++, what kind of bugs were there, how he worked hard to resolve them, what design patterns were applied…it went on and on and on.

Ultimately all the bugs were resolved, I left office at 10.30 PM and decided to watch the movie next time. Now I had two options: to go the near by bar and join my colleagues in the Manager Bashing Club or just Go Home.I chose the second, boarded on an almost empty bus and with some “Cool Wind In The Hair” started thinking Why? Why this happens? Why every manager sometime or the other starts talking about their programming absolutely out of context? Possible reasons might be:

He really loved his programming job.Somehow to move up in the ladder had to give up doing technical stuff and he misses it very much even today.

He really loved his programming job, wanted to make it big in the technical front.Somehow could not and that’s why talks about his past technical achievements to feel good.

He is a techie and still hands on, loves to share his experiences and mentor his team members.

He does not suffers from manager’s amnesia and still remembers his programming days and understands developer’s pain points.

He is technically a piece of shit, knows nothing apart from manipulation and politics, just wants to show off that he was a techie too and not to fool around with him on technology.

……

……

……
